The Dragon of Calais opens its wings to people with reduced mobility

The Dragon of Calais, an emblematic inhabitant of Calais LA Plage, impresses with its size and its surveys on the seafront. This giant mechanical creature, designed for the Compagnie du Dragon, transports visitors for a unique ride, aboard a panoramic terrace from which you can contemplate the maritime horizon.

If access on board via the staircase hidden in the dragon's tail may seem difficult for a person with reduced mobility (PRM), rest assured: accessibility has been carefully integrated into the experienceVisitors in wheelchairs or with mobility difficulties can access the dragon's back via an elevator. This provides access to a PRM walkway leading to the terrace. Boarding is comfortable, in less than 5 minutes, without stress or obstacles.

Throughout the 45-minute walk, people with reduced mobility can enjoy all the quality of an experience on board the Dragon de Calais. At the end of the walk, the return to the terrace of the Compagnie du Dragon, the starting point of the trip, is just as simple, with facilities provided to guarantee a smooth and pleasant experience.

The City of Lace and Fashion

Housed in a former lace factory with a striking character, the Cité de la Dentelle et de la Mode is much more than a museum. It is a place of visual, tactile, and sound exploration, where the industrial history of Calais meets contemporary creation. And it is also, above all, a space designed to welcome all audiences, with special attention paid to people with disabilities.

Central elevator, benches, folding seats available : everything is designed to allow a visit at your own pace, in complete autonomy. Visitors in wheelchairs can explore the entire museum, and groups benefit from adapted guided tours, with content adjusted by the mediators according to the profile and level of attention of the participants.

For visitors with visual impairments, a tactile model of the building accessible to the documentation center by appointment, allows you to find your way around the spaces. It also allows you to understand the ingenious system of interlocking floors. As for groups with mental disabilities, they benefit from tailor-made tours and workshops, built in consultation with the guides. Two educational rooms allow the discovery to be paced in a progressive and caring manner.

Demonstrations on accessible Leavers trades

At the heart of the permanent exhibition, the imposing Leavers looms are a real eye-catcher. Lace demonstrations, led live by a tulle maker, immerse visitors in a world of sounds, vibrations, and captivating technical gestures.

To allow everyone to benefit from it, a lifting platform A dedicated access point has been installed, facilitating access to this iconic space of the museum for people with reduced mobility. Thanks to this device, the emotion and power of lacemaking can be shared without hindrance.
