This meeting takes you to discover the Calais region in a different way: on horseback! Between wild beaches, green hills and breathtaking views, Calais XXL proves to be a true paradise for horse riding or hiking enthusiasts. To guide you, we met Constance, passionate rider, and Gatsby, his faithful companion.
Constance, where does your passion for horse riding come from, and how did Gatsby come into your life?
I've been passionate about horse riding since I was 8 years old. What has always fascinated me is the unique bond you can create with horses. For the past two years, I've shared this passion with Gatsby, my horse with a rather unusual background: a former racing trotter, he was then selected to star in the film Tempête with Mélanie Laurent, released in 2022. Today, he enjoys a more serene life by my side, in an ideal environment for rides.
What do you like most about horse riding and practicing it here?
Above all, it's the bond with the horse. I love spending time with him, teaching him new exercises, and above all, experiencing this bond every day. For me, a horse ride is much more than just a moment outdoors. It's a real disconnect. The horse feels everything: our emotions, our state of mind. It forces us to be present, to refocus.
This is an exceptional place! We are lucky to have a wide variety of landscapes: fields, hills, the sea... It is hilly, very open, and above all, there are many paths with little traffic, which is perfect for riding with complete peace of mind.

©Nohcab Why come and ride horses in Calais XXL?
Because it's a region still little known for horse riding... and yet, it has everything to offer! Between the beaches, the country roads, the hills... there is a real diversity of landscapes. Whether you are an experienced rider or simply a lover of rides, everyone can find what they are looking for. One must-see that I would give without hesitation: the seaside. It's the ideal place to enjoy the wide open spaces. Galloping on the beach or walking quietly facing the sea is always a unique moment.
And specifically, where are your favorite places to go horseback riding?
I love Les Noires Mottes. It has a magnificent view of the sea and the countryside. In spring, the wheat fields are superb, with the sea as a backdrop; it's just magical. I also love Sangatte beach, with its view of the cliffs of Cap Blanc-Nez. It's incredible at sunrise or sunset!
©Nohcab A favorite route?
My favorite route starts in Peuplingues. We cross the fields, climb up to Les Noires Mottes for a panoramic view, then descend to Sangatte to reach the beach. It's a loop that offers both countryside and coastline.
