Calais, a crossroads of architectural influences
What is Art Deco?
The Art Deco movement imposed its geometric lines and clean motifs after the First World War. It is also a lifestyle illustrating the Roaring TwentiesIn the aftermath of 1914-1918, the years 1920 will celebrate modernity, speed, new musical sounds such as the jazz. The 9th edition of the Art Deco Spring Festival in Hauts-de-France will celebrate this heritage from April 3rd to June 1st, 2026.
While Calais's architecture is symbolized by the Town Hall and its Belfry, it also presents other facets, shaped by the trials of history. Different eras have made Calais a city on the Opal Coast where different styles coexist. Art Deco occupies a prominent place, particularly around the Town Hall.
