A secluded beach

The Cran d'Escalles is not visible from the road. You have to go down, follow the path from the heights of the Cape Blanc-Nezand let the landscape gradually unfold. The cove then appears framed by white chalk: a pristine stretch of sand, nestled between the cliffs, with the Pas-de-Calais and the English coast on a clear day visible on the horizon. On one side, one can make out the Sangatte beaches et Blériot-PlageOn the other side, Cap Gris-Nez closes the horizon to the south. It is one of the few beaches in the territory where you find yourself literally at the foot of the cliff, in a position that nothing else on this coastline replicates.

The tide: danger

Visiting the Cran d'Escalles beach requires one essential condition: consulting tide times before leaving. At high tide, the beach disappears completely underwater. It's at low tide, and only at low tidethat the Cran reveals itself in all its amplitude. This constraint is part of its identity: it preserves the place from overcrowding and guarantees those who venture there an extraordinary experience, far from the hustle and bustle of developed beaches.

The Village of Stopovers

The beach takes its name from the village of Escalles, nestled between the sea and rolling hills just a few hundred meters away. Ideally located at the foot of one of the major sites on the Opal Coast, the village offers a diverse range of restaurants and accommodations, making it a convenient base for exploring both the Cran, the Cape Blanc-Nez and the surrounding trails. Two main routes cross the area: the EuroVelo route EV4 and the pilgrimage route Via Francigena, which connects Canterbury to Rome.
