Eglise Saint-Pierre de Bonningues-lès-Calais
Eglise Saint-Pierre de Bonningues-lès-Calais
28 Chemin de l'Anglaise - 62340 BONNINGUES-LES-CALAIS
The church's origins date back to the early 12th century. Its medieval chancel, still visible today, is the oldest part of the building and a reminder of the parish's importance in medieval times. The church was rebuilt in 1619, giving it a simple style inspired by Romanesque architecture, characteristic of rural churches in northern France. Over the centuries, the building has undergone several transformations. After the bell tower collapsed following the Second World War, it was rebuilt. A major restoration campaign in the early 2000s also preserved the vaults, stained-glass windows, and several pieces of liturgical furniture. Among the notable features, visitors can discover an ancient bell dating from the 16th century, a precious witness to the village's history. The church also retains a restored altarpiece and rood beam, which contribute to the building's authentic charm. Surrounded by its cemetery and integrated into the green landscape of the Calais region, the Church of Saint-Pierre in Bonningues-lès-Calais offers visitors a peaceful heritage interlude, ideal when discovering the villages and heritage around Calais and the Calais XXL destination.
