See the itinerary

Calais has a special connection with Charles de Gaulle, as his wife was from the city. This monumental statue depicts the man of June 18, 1940, and the British Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill. The two illustrious heads of state, side by side, symbolize the alliance between the two countries during the World Wars. At the main entrance to Richelieu Park, one can easily distinguish Charles de Gaulle in his military uniform and Sir Winston Churchill with his ever-present cigar. The statue's significance lies in the fact that at the end of the Second World War, they faced a terribly wounded France... which would gradually rebuild itself! This monumental statue is a project undertaken by the City of Calais. It was created and sculpted by Patrick Berthaud, whose studio is in Alsace. The inauguration took place in June 2017. Did you know? At the inauguration ceremony on June 24, 2017, the Churchill family was represented by Sir Nicholas Soames. This British parliamentarian is the grandson of the iconic British Prime Minister.
