For decades, Calais has been the leading French and European passenger port. This dominance was reinforced in the 21st century with a massive expansion of the port facilities, Calais Port 2015! The passenger port of Calais has undergone numerous transformations, from the fragile sailing ships moored there in the Middle Ages to the historic "paradise basin" and now to the colossal Calais Port 2015! With the Channel Tunnel (opened in 1994) to the west of the city, and the port to the east, Calais has long been the main crossing point between continental Europe and Great Britain: it offers the shortest crossings to English ports. The port of Calais alone handled over 7 million passengers in 2024. It is also a major player in European freight, with over 2 million trucks passing through Calais. At the beginning of the 21st century, the port of Calais had to adapt to global changes: new generations of ships, environmental and customs regulations (Brexit), the development of rail freight, etc. Thus, 30 years after the Channel Tunnel construction project, new, monumental works were undertaken on the Calais XXL coastline: the 2010s were dedicated to the expansion of the cross-Channel port, the Calais Port 2015 project. Good to know: a panoramic view of the entire passenger port (or in other words, the cross-Channel port) is possible! In the Passenger Reception Terminal (the orange building), on the upper floor, a terrace offers a 360° view of the infrastructure and allows you to see the boarding procedure: check-in, customs control, boarding area, and entry onto the ships.
