The Bestiary of Calais
Since 2019, Calais has been writing its own destiny through an extraordinary cultural project! The Compagnie du Dragon presents an original bestiary that draws its inspiration from the thirty-year-old local culture of urban theatre. Every day, the Company offers a fresh perspective on the city: that of culture, which transcends the urban environment. Throughout the year, join us on the Calais seafront or in the city's neighborhoods to encounter the two creatures that have made the city famous: the Dragon of Calais and the Traveling Monitor Lizard!

The figure of the Dragon was already well established in Calais, its main reference enthroned at the top of the Belfry of the Town Hall in the shape of a weather vane. For the earliest reference, one must look at the painting by Friedrich Bouterwek from 1845. It depicts an overview of a historical event that took place in 1520 at the gates of Calais: the meeting at the Field of the Cloth of Gold between Francis Ier and Henry VIII of England. What can be seen in flight over Calais? Bullseye, a dragon! Finally, a true European crossroads marked by the presence of three elements: water, earth and winds, the dragon's flame completes the identity of a city that takes its destiny into its own hands.

Every day, the Compagnie du Dragon invites you to rediscover the city from a new perspective: that of culture, which transcends the urban environment. The experience is immersive, taking you on a journey into the world of François Delaroziere, the various professions within the Compagnie's teams, and also into local history and heritage, all with a touch of humor and warmth that so characterizes us in Calais.

In the neighborhoods of Calais
The Traveling Varan, inspired by the real-life Varan Perenti, can take up to 25 seated passengers on rides. Sharing DNA with the giant reptile, the Varan traveled across Australia and then Europe, guided by a mysterious magnetic wave emitted by the dragon. After defeating Lilith, the Guardian of Darkness, the Varan will continue to watch over the city's neighborhoods throughout the year, beginning with the Courgain Maritime district.

The City of the Dragon on the seafront
Just a stone's throw from the Calais pier, the Cité du Dragon is the starting point of a meeting between the world of the monumental machines of Calais and the life of the port. The iconic winged-shaped venue brings together the Lair, home to the Dragon of Calais, the shop and ticket offices, as well as the new Flamme restaurant along a promenade overlooking the sea. We recommend you explore this vibrant place, where the Dragon comes to life with each appearance. Designed as a gateway to the imagination of the Compagnie du Dragon, the City offers an immersive experience blending exploration, relaxation, dining, and privileged observation of the menagerie that roams the city throughout the year.
