A tradition dating back to the 16th century

This tradition dates back to 1558. After the reconquest of Calais by François de Guise, King François II granted the people of Calais the right to hold two annual fairs as well as a weekly market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. the Place d'Armes, a right that is still in force today.

The square itself bears the marks of this long history: site of the siege of Calais in 1346-1347, renamed "Market Place" during the English occupation, then rebuilt after the bombings of the Second World War.
