Coloring and shading the city

Patricia Cunha returns to Calais for the fourth time since her first visit, after a break in 2025 to allow the Varan de Voyage light to take center stage. The Portuguese artist has become known worldwide for her suspended installations of multicolored umbrellas, theUmbrella Skywhose images have circulated widely around the world. In Calais, she has already transformed alleyways with a shower of flying hearts and rainbow ribbons, or released hundreds of translucent balloons above passersby. For this new edition, she is building her creations around the beach, with balloons and buoys that extend the seaside atmosphere into the city center.

What awaits you in the city

Recycled Ivy, rue du Commandant Mengin, suspends garlands of colorful and translucent leaves above the street. Color Rain, royal street, stretches a sky of ribbons in gradient colors, taken from the monochrome of the rainbow. Beach buoys, On rue Charost, multicolored and translucent inflatable buoys are multiplying, directly echoing the Calais coastline. Giant Ball In the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, in the gardens of the Place du Soldat Inconnu, giant beach balls are being installed. The Divers, at the market hall Place d'Armes, feature small sculptures in the shape of divers hung on colorful ribbons.

For several years, Patricia Cunha has been creating work that shifts the way we look at urban space. Her installations, suspended or placed on the ground, transform ordinary streets into immersive settings that are as much sensory as they are visual. In Calais, where she has become a regular summer exhibitor, her creations have punctuated the city center landscape for several seasons.
